Intermodal precincts | Beveridge

The Beveridge Intermodal Precinct is a  modern intermodal precinct to be developed in Melbourne’s north. On completion this will be Australia’s largest and most sustainable intermodal precinct.

Endorsed by the Australian Government’s independent review of Inland Rail and supported by its two-terminal strategy for Melbourne, this project will help transform the nation’s supply chain and importantly, lower costs for Australian businesses and families.

Strategically located on the Inland Rail route, the 1,100 hectare-site with 600 hectares of developable land will have the ability to offer the efficiency of double-stacked container services for 1,800-metre freight trains to Perth via Parkes, and to Brisbane on completion of Inland Rail.

The Beveridge Intermodal Precinct will significantly enhance competition in the rail freight sector by ensuring independent, open access arrangements for all industry participants and offer the ability to provide freight services across Melbourne and through to Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth.

Beveridge will be a sustainable and future-proofed intermodal precinct – combining automation, electrification and renewable energies, and on completion of Stage 1B, able to process around 500,000 TEU per year.

In addition, the development will deliver a variety of components including common use infrastructure, 850,000 square metres of co-located warehousing, and complementary activities including food & beverage and lifestyle amenities, accommodation, and servicing.

National Intermodal’s landholding will allow for expansion of the precinct in the future.

Precinct progress

Further to the Australian Government’s agreement with the Inland Rail review recommendation to develop two Melbourne intermodal precincts, National Intermodal is developing the first of these terminals on a 1,100 hectare site at Beveridge in Melbourne’s north.

Construction of the Beveridge Intermodal Precinct is intended to begin in 2024. Delivery of an initial rail terminal is targeted for 2025 to support industry need for independent terminals, with rail access and heavy vehicle marshalling yard (Stage 1A).
